Overview
SIMATIC S7-1500 is Siemens' advanced controller for machines and production lines with high demands on speed and communication. It is modular and scalable: CPUs, system power supplies, signal modules, technology modules (such as counting) and communication modules are combined centrally or in distributed configurations. The system is rated IP20 and intended for installation in a control cabinet.

- Standard: from the CPU 1511-1 PN to the CPU 1518-3 PN and 1518-4 PN/DP.
- Compact: CPU 1511C and 1512C with integrated I/O.
- Fail-safe (F): F versions of the standard classes for safety applications.
- Technology (T): for advanced motion control; Siemens names extended gear synchronization, cyclic cams and graphically supported kinematics for them.
- Redundant and fault-tolerant (R/H): CPU 1513R-1 PN and 1515R-2 PN, and CPU 1517H-3 PN, 1517H-4 PN and 1518HF-4 PN.
- MFP: CPU 1518 MFP, which runs C/C++ blocks next to the STEP 7 program.
New CPU generation
In the new CPU generation (firmware V4.1) work memory ranges from 1.8 MB in the CPU 1511-1 PN to 162 MB in the CPU 1518-3 PN, and the bit instruction time from 6 ns down to 0.3 ns (table in the CPU 1511-1 PN manual, edition 01/2026). The CPUs have a display and at least one PROFINET interface with a two-port switch.
Communication and security
A PROFINET interface with IRT is built into the CPU; Siemens names PROFINET, Industrial Ethernet and OPC UA. The security-by-default concept includes authorization levels, block protection and communication integrity.
Safety and motion control
Standard and fail-safe control run in one system with one engineering. PROFIsafe devices connect over PROFIBUS and PROFINET, and the data sheet of the CPU 1511F-1 PN states SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and PL e (ISO 13849-1). Every S7-1500 CPU supports motion control without additional modules.
Engineering
Configuration, programming and diagnostics are done in TIA Portal. According to the data sheets the new CPUs with firmware V4.1 are integrated from STEP 7 V21, and CPUs with firmware V3.0 from V18.
Lifecycle
The family is in production. Some previous-generation CPU codes (firmware V2.9, such as 6ES7511-1AK02-0AB0 and 6ES7515-2AM02-0AB0) are headed 'spare part' in Siemens' data sheets, and the new-generation codes have taken their place.
