SINAMICS G120
Modular Siemens frequency converter from 0.55 kW to 250 kW, with a separate control unit and power module and integrated safety functions up to SIL 2

SINAMICS G120 is Siemens' modular frequency converter for general industrial duty. Unlike one-piece converters, each unit is built from two separate parts: a power module that supplies the motor, and a control unit that controls and monitors the motor and talks to the automation system. The operator panel is chosen separately.
That separation is the family's main advantage: changing the fieldbus protocol or adding safety functions means changing the control unit while the power module stays in place.
0.55 kW to 250 kW, in three voltage families: 200 V, 400 V and 690 V. The power section uses IGBTs with pulse width modulation.
The safety functions are integrated in the drive and need no external safety relay: STO, SS1, SBC, SLS, SDI and SSM, up to SIL 2 to EN 61508 and PL d to EN ISO 13849-1.
Configuration and commissioning are done with SINAMICS Startdrive inside TIA Portal, so the drive lives in the same project as the PLC and the HMI.

The power module supplies the motor and is chosen from the motor's power and voltage. The control unit controls and monitors the motor and is chosen from the fieldbus and the safety functions you need. The usual order is the power module from the motor first, then the control unit from the automation system.

Siemens' catalog separates the three series by application. The CU230P-2 is made for pumps, fans and compressors: four free PID controllers, more analog inputs for pressure and temperature sensors, hibernation mode and cascade control; its HVAC version also speaks BACnet MS/TP. The CU240E-2 is for general machine building such as conveyors, mixers and extruders, with 6 digital inputs, 2 analog inputs and one PID controller. The CU250S-2 is for complex single drives such as extruders and centrifuges and for positioning: it takes an encoder, gives STO, SBC and SS1, and the EPos positioner and the extended safety functions can be added by licence. Choose by the inputs and outputs, fieldbus and safety you need, then pick the power module that fits the motor.
Four control units have a PROFINET version: the CU240E-2 PN, 6SL3244-0BB12-1FA0; its fail-safe sibling the CU240E-2 PN-F, 6SL3244-0BB13-1FA0; the CU250S-2 PN, 6SL3246-0BA22-1FA0; and the CU230P-2 PN, 6SL3243-0BB30-1FA0. According to Siemens' catalog every PN unit carries both PROFINET (with the PROFIdrive and PROFIenergy profiles, 100 Mbit/s, two RJ45 ports) and EtherNet/IP (with the ODVA AC drive profile and the SINAMICS profile); the PN versions of the CU240E-2 and CU250S-2 also include PROFIsafe. For PROFIBUS DP, choose the DP version of the same control unit.
It depends on the control unit, not just on the family. STO comes with every CU240E-2, CU250S-2 and CU230P-2 (the CU230P-2 only with PM240-2 frame sizes FSD to FSG, PM240P-2 FSD to FSF or the PM330). The F versions, CU240E-2 F, DP-F and PN-F, add SS1, SLS and SDI, and on the DP-F and PN-F also SSM over PROFIsafe. The CU250S-2 gives STO, SBC and SS1 as standard (SBC needs the Safe Brake Relay), and SLS, SDI and SSM with the licence for the extended safety functions. None of them needs an encoder, and they reach SIL 2 and PL d. SS1, SLS, SDI and SSM are not permitted on pulling loads such as hoists and unwinders. With PM240-2 frame sizes FSD to FSG, STO can also be wired to terminals on the power module itself, at SIL 3 and PL e; the converter's mission time is then restricted.
In the legend of Siemens' catalog, the letter in front of the final L0 of a PM240-2 article number shows the integrated line filter: U for none, A for Class A (Category C2 on frame size FSG) and C for Category C3 (FSG only); the catalog lists the final 0 as the standard heat sink. So 6SL3210-1PE23-3UL0 is the 15 kW, 400 V, FSC module without filter, and 6SL3210-1PE23-3AL0 the same module with a Class A filter. The middle group gives the rating: for example 1PE23-3 is 32 A, 15 kW at low overload (LO). A Class A filter suits TN supplies; a module without filter runs on grounded TN/TT and on IT supplies, but then the installer has to provide the radio-interference suppression to reach Category C3 or C2. Some small-frame codes end in L1, a digit the catalog does not explain.
With the PM240-2 the braking chopper is built in, but the excess DC-link energy has to be dissipated in an external braking resistor; these resistors are designed for the PM240-2, and for an EMC-compliant connection on frame sizes FSD to FSG the matching shield connection kit must be ordered as well. With the PM250 power module (7.5 kW to 90 kW, frame sizes FSC to FSF, 380 V to 480 V only) the braking energy is fed straight back into the line supply (Efficient Infeed Technology), so no braking resistor, braking chopper or line reactor is needed; Siemens states that no line reactor may be used with the PM250.
