SIRIUS 3RT power contactors
Siemens three-pole power contactors for switching motors, from size S00 to S12 and up to 250 kW at 400 V, with AC, DC and AC/DC coils

The SIRIUS 3RT power contactor is an electromagnetic switch that connects and disconnects the three-phase main circuit of a motor when its coil is energised. A contactor does not protect the motor on its own: short circuits are cleared by a 3RV motor starter protector or by fuses, and overloads by a 3RU or 3RB overload relay. In a starter, the 3RT is the part that switches the motor on and off from a PLC output or a push-button.
The 3RT2 generation covers sizes S00 and S0 (45 mm wide), S2 (55 mm) and S3 (70 mm). The AC-3 operational current at 400 V runs from 7 A (3 kW, 3RT2015) to 110 A (55 kW, 3RT2047). Each size has several codes: S00 from 3RT2015 to 3RT2018 (16 A, 7.5 kW), S0 from 3RT2023 (9 A, 4 kW) to 3RT2028 (38 A, 18.5 kW), S2 from 3RT2035 (41 A, 18.5 kW) to 3RT2038 (80 A, 37 kW) and S3 from 3RT2045 to 3RT2047.
For higher power the 3RT1 generation provides sizes S6 (120 mm wide), S10 and S12 (145 mm wide); S6 starts with 3RT1054 (115 A, 55 kW) and S12 reaches 500 A and 250 kW at 400 V with 3RT1076.
Coil voltage and type are part of the order number. In size S0 these codes were confirmed on data sheets: 24 V AC (3RT2026-1AB00), 110 V AC (…-1AF00), 230 V AC (…-1AL20 and …-1AP00), 220 V AC (…-1AN20), 24 V DC (…-1BB40) and universal 21 to 28 V AC/DC (…-1NB30). In S2 and S3, 110 V AC, 230 V AC and universal 20 to 33 V AC/DC coils were seen. S6 to S12 use AC/DC coils in three bands: 23 to 26 V, 110 to 127 V and 220 to 240 V. The operating range of an AC coil at 50 Hz is 0.8 to 1.1 times the rated voltage. The coil frequency is not the same in every size, so always read the coil from the data sheet of the exact order number.
The 3RT2 data sheets show AC-3e/AC-3 together. AC-3e was added to IEC 60947-4-1 and takes the higher starting current of high-efficiency motors into account; according to Siemens' 3RV manual (02/2026), all SIRIUS protection and switching devices covered by that standard meet the requirement.
Together these three families make a motor starter. In the fuseless design, a 3RV2 motor starter protector takes both short-circuit and overload protection and is joined to the 3RT2 with a link module. In the design with an overload relay, short-circuit protection comes from fuses or a 3RV23, and a 3RU bimetal or 3RB electronic relay mounts directly under the contactor. The data sheet of each code states which contactor sizes it can be combined with.

The AC-3 (or AC-3e) operational current of the contactor at the supply voltage must be at least the rated current of the motor. Examples from the data sheets at 400 V: 3RT2015 (7 A, 3 kW), 3RT2026 (25 A, 11 kW), 3RT2036 (51 A, 22 kW), 3RT2038 (80 A, 37 kW) and 3RT2047 (110 A, 55 kW). The contactor size must also fit the protector and the overload relay.
By the control supply of the panel. The coil voltage and type (AC, DC or AC/DC) are part of the order number; for example 3RT2026-1BB40 has a 24 V DC coil and 3RT2026-1AL20 a 230 V AC coil. The coil frequency is not the same in every size: 3RT2018-1AP01 (S00) is for 50/60 Hz but 3RT2028-1AP00 (S0) for 50 Hz only. Read the data sheet of the exact code before ordering.
AC-3 is the utilization category for starting squirrel-cage induction motors. AC-3e was added to IEC 60947-4-1 and accounts for the higher starting current of high-efficiency motors. According to the 3RV manual of Siemens (02/2026), all SIRIUS protection and switching devices covered by that standard meet the AC-3e requirement, and the 3RT2 data sheet shows both categories together.
The 3RT2 goes up to size S3 and 55 kW (110 A). Above that is the 3RT1 generation: S6 with 3RT1054-1AP36 (115 A, 55 kW), S10 with 110 to 160 kW according to the 2024 short-form catalogue, and S12 with 3RT1076-6AP36 (500 A, 250 kW). The 3RT1 coil is AC/DC and its main circuit has box terminals or a busbar connection.
No. The contactor only switches. Short circuits are cleared by a 3RV motor starter protector or fuses, and overloads by a 3RU or 3RB overload relay. A 3RV2 with a 3RT2 is the fuseless load feeder that Siemens also supplies ready-assembled as 3RA2.
