Production status: Phase-out
According to SiePortal (the Industry Mall's successor, checked on 2 November 2026), one article was checked for each of nine of the 16 SIPROTEC 4 families still listed in its catalog tree. Eight show the lifecycle status "Prod. Cancellation": Siemens announced the phase-out on 30 September 2022 and cancelled production on 30 September 2024 (7SS52 bay unit: 31 March 2024). These articles are labelled "Spare Part" and each names a SIPROTEC 5 successor: 7UT613 to 7UT85/86/87, 7UM62 to 7UM85, 7SA522 to 7SA82/86/87, 7SA61 to 7SA82, 7SD522 to the line differential devices 7SD8x and 7SL8x, 7VK61 to 7VK87, 6MD66 to the modular 6MD8, and 7SS52 to 6MU85 and the SIPROTEC 5 modular devices. The ninth, 7SJ66 (7SJ6611-5EB90-1FA0), is still an "Active Product" with no phase-out date and no successor. The other seven families (7SJ64, 7SA63, 7SA64, 7SD610, 7UT63, 7VE6 and 7VU68) were not checked. The whole family is therefore recorded as phase-out, not discontinued: production of most devices has stopped but one family is still on sale. No end date for spare-parts supply appears on the pages; for an existing installation ask Siemens or your distributor about stock and the spares period, and for a new project start from SIPROTEC 5.

Overview
Overview
SIPROTEC 4 is the previous generation of Siemens digital protection relays for substations. The family covers overcurrent and motor protection (7SJ), distance protection (7SA), line differential protection (7SD), transformer differential protection (7UT), generator and motor protection (7UM), busbar protection (7SS), breaker management (7VK), paralleling devices (7VE), high-speed busbar transfer (7VU) and bay controllers (6MD). Each device is a numerical relay in a fixed housing; its functions, number of inputs and outputs and communication ports are set by the order number (MLFB).

The current generation is SIPROTEC 5. In SiePortal, Siemens names a SIPROTEC 5 successor for every SIPROTEC 4 family that was checked, except 7SJ66.
How to tell which generation you hold
The device type is printed on the housing and the full order number is on the label on top of the case. Types such as 7SJ64, 7SJ66, 7SA522, 7SA61, 7SD5, 7UT613, 7UM62, 7SS52, 7VK61 and 6MD66 are SIPROTEC 4 and are set with DIGSI 4. Types such as 7SJ85, 7SA87, 7UT85, 7UM85 and 7SS85, or the compact 7SX800, are SIPROTEC 5 and are set with DIGSI 5.
Protection functions
The functions of a device depend on its order number. The 7SJ63 manual (multifunction protection with local control) lists: time-overcurrent for phase and ground (50, 50N, 51, 51N), directional overcurrent (67, 67N), breaker failure (50BF), negative sequence (46), thermal overload (49), under- and overvoltage (27, 59), under- and overfrequency (81O/U), automatic reclosing (79) and, for motors, starting time supervision (48), start inhibit (66/68) and undercurrent (37). The distance (21), transformer (87T) and line (87L) differential and busbar (87B) families carry their own main functions; the exact table for each type is in that device's manual.
Communication and software
According to the 7SJ63 manual, the system-interface protocols are IEC 60870-5-103, PROFIBUS FMS and DP, Modbus and DNP3.0 over RS232, RS485 or optical fibre, and IEC 61850 is added with the EN100 Ethernet module. The relay is set with DIGSI 4, through the PC port on the front panel or an optional service port on the rear. DIGSI 4 is still an "Active Product", and an upgrade path from DIGSI 4 Professional to DIGSI 5 Standard exists.
Hardware
Housing widths are 1/3, 1/2 or 1/1 of 19 inches; mounting is flush or surface; terminals are screw type (ring lugs) or plug-in; displays are text or graphical, and surface-mounted versions have a detached operator panel. Unlike modular SIPROTEC 5, the housing, inputs and outputs and ports of each device are fixed when it is ordered.
Production status and successor
Most families show the status "Prod. Cancellation" in SiePortal (production cancelled on 30 September 2024, and on 31 March 2024 for the 7SS52 bay unit) and are offered as spare parts only. 7SJ66 was still active when checked. The detail and the successor of each family are in the lifecycle section.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tell whether my relay is SIPROTEC 4 or SIPROTEC 5?
The device type is on the housing and the full order number is on the label on top of the case. Types such as 7SJ64, 7SJ66, 7SA522, 7SA61, 7SD5, 7UT613, 7UM62, 7SS52, 7VK61 and 6MD66 are SIPROTEC 4 and are set with DIGSI 4. Types such as 7SJ85, 7SA87, 7UT85, 7UM85 and 7SS85, or 7SX800, are SIPROTEC 5 and are set with DIGSI 5. If your type is in neither list, send the full order number to be checked.
Can SIPROTEC 4 still be bought new?
It depends on the family. In SiePortal (checked on 2 November 2026) eight of the nine families checked showed "Prod. Cancellation": production stopped on 30 September 2024 (7SS52: 31 March 2024) and the device is a spare part. Only 7SJ66 was an "Active Product". For a new project choose SIPROTEC 5; for an existing installation ask Siemens or your distributor about stock and spares supply.
What is the successor of each SIPROTEC 4 family?
According to the successor field in SiePortal: 7UT613 to 7UT85/86/87, 7UM62 to 7UM85, 7SA522 to 7SA82, 7SA86 and 7SA87, 7SA61 to 7SA82, 7SD522 to the line differential devices 7SD8x and 7SL8x, 7VK61 to 7VK87, 6MD66 to the modular 6MD8, and the 7SS52 bay unit to 6MU85 and the SIPROTEC 5 modular devices. No successor is named for 7SJ66. These are family-level successors; the pages do not say that housing, wiring and I/O are interchangeable, so every project has to be checked.
Which protocols does SIPROTEC 4 have, and what about IEC 61850?
According to the 7SJ63 manual, the system-interface protocols are IEC 60870-5-103, PROFIBUS FMS and DP, Modbus and DNP3.0, and IEC 61850 is added with the EN100 Ethernet module. Which of them a device has follows from its order number; for example 7UT6131-2EB91-1AA0 has Modbus RS485 on port B.
Can SIPROTEC 4 and SIPROTEC 5 line relays share protection communication?
The Siemens profiles of the 7SA87 and 7SL87 (SIPROTEC 5) describe serial protection communication with SIPROTEC 5 and SIPROTEC 4 devices over optical fibre, two-wire connections and communication networks, and name the "Interoperability of SIPROTEC 4 and SIPROTEC 5 line protection devices". This helps a staged migration of lines; check the details in the manuals of the two devices concerned.

The earlier range of Reyrolle protection relays (Argus, Duobias, Rho and DAD): models such as 7SR10, 7SR45 and 7SR46 are still active, while 7SR21, 7SR22 and 7SR242 are cancelled and substitutes, including Reyrolle 5, are named for them
