Siemens molded case circuit breakers from 16 A to 1600 A, with thermal-magnetic (3VA1) or electronic (3VA2) trip units and breaking capacity up to 200 kA at 415 V

SENTRON 3VA is Siemens' family of molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) for protecting cables and lines, generators, motors and starters in low-voltage switchboards. All frame sizes share one accessory platform, and the family comes in two main ranges: 3VA1 for standard applications with a thermal-magnetic trip unit, and 3VA2 for demanding applications with an electronic trip unit, better selectivity, metering and a connection to a communication system. 3VA27 is the 1600 A frame and shares its trip units and accessories with the 3WL10 air circuit breaker. This page covers the IEC versions only; the UL versions (3VA5 and 3VA6) are separate families.
3VA1 has six frame sizes: 3VA10 (100 A), 3VA11 (160), 3VA12 (250), 3VA13 (400), 3VA14 (630) and 3VA15 (1000 A). 3VA2 has seven frame sizes from 3VA20 (100 A) to 3VA26 (1250 A), and 3VA27 is the 1600 A frame with a rated current of 800 A to 1600 A. In line protection the rated current In runs from 16 A (3VA1) to 1600 A (3VA27).
The ultimate breaking capacity Icu at 415 V is 16 to 110 kA for 3VA1 (classes B, N, S, M, H and C) and 55 to 200 kA for 3VA2 (classes M, H, C, L and E); class E exists only up to 630 A, and 3VA27 reaches 110 kA. The rated operational voltage goes up to 690 V AC, but the breaking capacity at 690 V is much lower than at 415 V (only 6 kA for a class M 3VA24), so on a 690 V network read the row for that voltage in the catalog table or in the data sheet of the exact article.
3VA1 uses the thermal-magnetic trip units TM210, TM220 and TM240 for line protection and TM120M for starter protection; on the TM240 both the overload setting Ir and the short-circuit setting Ii are adjustable. 3VA20 to 3VA26 use electronic trip units in three series: the 3-series (ETU320, ETU330, ETU340, ETU350) with a rotary switch, the 5-series (ETU550, ETU560) with a display, and the 8-series (ETU850, ETU860) with a display and an integrated measurement function; the M versions are for motor and starter protection. The letters LSIG stand for the overload (L), short-time delayed short-circuit (S), instantaneous short-circuit (I) and ground-fault (G) functions. 3VA27 has the ETU320, ETU350 and ETU360 (rotary switches) and the ETU650 and ETU660 (display, measurement and communication capability).
On 3VA2 the 5- and 8-series trip units connect through the COM060 module to the COM800 or COM100 data concentrator, and from there to PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus RTU or Ethernet (Modbus TCP); the DSP800 display for the cubicle door and a 24 V module for an independent trip unit supply are also available. On 3VA27 the COM040 to COM043 modules work with the 6-series trip unit.
Three criteria decide it. Current: 3VA reaches 1600 A; above that only 3WL (up to 6300 A) or its successor 3WA is suitable. Breaking capacity: at 630 A and below, 3VA2 offers up to 200 kA at 415 V against up to 66 kA for the 3WL10. Duty: the 3WL air circuit breaker is utilization category B, has a withdrawable version on a guide frame, and the 3WL10 has a mechanical life of 20,000 cycles (3VA27: 10,000 cycles). Between 800 A and 1600 A the 3VA27 and the 3WL10 share a platform and have the same fixed-mounted dimensions.
The LV 10 catalog add-on of 08/2026 introduces a new range, 3VA2 plus: the same 3VA2 platform with the same dimensions and accessories, up to 630 A (3VA20 to 3VA24), with 4-, 7- and 9-series trip units, Bluetooth, USB-C, an integrated radio interface, the DAS+ maintenance mode and the COM120 and COM121 modules for Ethernet.

Decide on three criteria.
Between 800 A and 1600 A the 3VA27 and the 3WL10 share a platform and have the same fixed-mounted dimensions. In every case size the rated current from the load current and the short-circuit current at the installation point.
The 3VA1 has a thermal-magnetic trip unit (TM210, TM220, TM240) and is meant for standard applications up to 1000 A; its breaking capacity is 16 to 110 kA at 415 V and it is also used on DC circuits. The 3VA2 has an electronic trip unit, a breaking capacity of 55 to 200 kA, better selectivity, a measurement function and a connection to a communication system; it is for AC only and reaches 1600 A with the 3VA27.
If only overload and short-circuit protection with simple settings is needed, the TM240 in the 3VA1 is enough. If a short-time delayed short circuit (S) for selectivity or a ground fault (G) is needed, choose an electronic trip unit: the 3-series with a rotary switch (ETU350 for LSI), the 5-series with a display, and the 8-series when metering and communication are also wanted. For motors and starters use the M versions (ETU310M, ETU350M, ETU550M, ETU860M), and in the 3VA1 the TM120M trip unit.
The 3VA1 structure in the Siemens catalog is: 3VA11 is the 160 A frame; 63 is the maximum rated current of 63 A; 4 is a breaking capacity of 36 kA at 415 V; E is without neutral protection; F is the TM240 trip unit; 3 is 3-pole; 6 is box terminals; 0AA0 is the fixed end of the code. For a full 3VA2 or 3VA27 code, use the Siemens configurator instead of guessing.
Yes, but only with suitable electronic trip units. On the 3VA2 the 5- and 8-series trip units connect through the COM060 module to the COM800 data concentrator (up to eight breakers) or the COM100 (one breaker), and from there to PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP. On the 3VA27 the 6-series trip unit works with the COM040 to COM043 modules. The 3-series and thermal-magnetic trip units have no communication capability.
The 3VA2 plus is a new range introduced in the LV 10 catalog add-on of 08/2026: the same 3VA2 platform with the same dimensions, selectivity and accessories, up to 630 A, with 4-, 7- and 9-series trip units, Bluetooth, USB-C, the DAS+ maintenance mode and an Ir setting down to 20% of In. Siemens does not say that it retires the 3VA2 up to 630 A; the classic 3VA2 articles are still shown as 'Active Product' on SiePortal.
