Overview

Overview

The SIRIUS 3RV motor starter protector is a compact, current-limiting device made for protecting and switching three-phase motors and similar loads. One device gives thermal (bimetal) overload protection, instantaneous short-circuit protection and phase-loss sensitivity, and has a lockable rotary operating mechanism for manual on/off switching, for example during repair work. Sizes and range

3RV2 comes in four sizes. At 400 V: S00 up to 16 A and 7.5 kW, S0 up to 40 A and 18.5 kW (both 45 mm wide), S2 up to 80 A and 37 kW (55 mm) and S3 up to 100 A and 45 kW (70 mm). The setting range of the whole family is 0.11 A to 100 A and each code covers a narrow window of it; for example 3RV2011-1HA10 is set between 5.5 A and 8 A (S00) and 3RV2041-4MA10 between 80 A and 100 A (S3). The 3RV1 series exists only in size S00 and up to 12 A.

Versions

3RV20 is the standard version with overload and short-circuit protection. 3RV21 has an overload relay function: short-circuit protection and automatic reset after an overload in one device. 3RV23 is for starter combinations and takes short-circuit protection only; next to a 3RB electronic overload relay it gives a wide setting range and automatic reset. 3RV24 is for transformer protection and 3RV27 and 3RV28 are circuit breakers to UL 489.

Protection

3RV10, 3RV20 and 3RV21 conform to CLASS 10 of IEC 60947-4-1, and some size S2 and S3 variants of 3RV20 meet CLASS 20. The short-circuit release is factory-set to a multiple of the rated current, about 13 times in 3RV20, and its value in amperes is lasered onto the front; in the 3RV24 transformer version it is higher so that inrush current does not trip it. With a short-circuit breaking capacity of 50, 55, 65 or 100 kA at 400 V (depending on the version), a backup fuse is only needed when the short-circuit current at the installation point exceeds the breaking capacity of the protector. The device is temperature-compensated up to 60 degrees C; between 60 and 70 degrees C the upper end of the setting range has to be reduced.

Beside 3RT and 3RU/3RB

3RV2 is electrically and mechanically matched to 3RT contactors, 3RF solid-state contactors and 3RW soft starters and is joined to them with link modules. A 3RV20 plus a 3RT2 makes a fuseless load feeder and needs no separate overload relay. Where a wider setting range or a higher trip class is needed, a 3RV23 is combined with a 3RB electronic overload relay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 3RV20, 3RV21, 3RV23 and 3RV24?

3RV20 is the standard version with overload and short-circuit protection. 3RV21 has an overload relay function (short-circuit protection plus automatic reset after an overload). 3RV23 takes short-circuit protection only and is made to combine with a 3RB electronic overload relay. 3RV24 is for transformer protection and its short-circuit release is set higher. 3RV27 and 3RV28 are to UL 489.

What current should the protector be set to?

The large knob is set to the rated current on the motor nameplate, and the code is chosen so that this current lies in its setting window; for example a 7 A motor on a 3RV2011-1HA10 (5.5 to 8 A). The short-circuit release is fixed at a multiple of the top of the scale and its value is lasered onto the front, so it does not change when the knob is turned.

Is a separate overload relay needed with a 3RV?

Not with a 3RV20: the thermal overload release and the short-circuit release are in the same device and, with a contactor, form a fuseless feeder. 3RV21 signals an overload through an auxiliary contact with automatic reset. 3RV23 has no overload release and must be combined with a 3RB electronic relay (or with fuses and a 3RU relay).

What happens above 60 degrees C ambient?

The 3RV2 is temperature-compensated up to 60 degrees C. Between 60 and 70 degrees C the current is set to 1.1 times the motor current (up to the top of the scale) and the upper end of the setting range is reduced by the factor in the table; at 70 degrees C the factor is 0.87 (0.94 for S00 and S0 at 22 to 32 A). The 36 A and 40 A versions in S0 are only suitable up to 40 degrees C. For S00, S0 and S2 there are also special versions down to minus 50 degrees C with the suffix -0BA0.

How is a 3RV attached to a contactor?

With a link module, which makes the electrical and mechanical connection between the protector and the contactor (or solid-state contactor or soft starter). There are three types: screw-type, spring-loaded (S00 and S0 only) and hybrid, where the protector has screw terminals and the contactor spring-loaded ones (S00 and S0 only).
