Overview
SINAMICS G120C is Siemens' compact converter for control-cabinet mounting (IP20). In the G120 each unit is built from two separate parts, a power module and a control unit; in the G120C these two parts are combined in one housing and the converter is bought under a single article number. The fieldbus version (PROFINET and EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS DP or USS/Modbus RTU) is also fixed by that article number.

Siemens positions the G120C for continuous motion with mid-range performance, where more precise control of speed and torque is needed and the converter still has to be small and simple to select.
Range
0.55 kW to 132 kW in seven frame sizes (FSAA to FSF), for a three-phase 380 V to 480 V supply only. All frame sizes can be mounted side by side without derating; frame sizes FSD to FSF have an integrated DC reactor and need no line reactor. Control is V/f (linear, square-law, FCC and ECO) or sensorless vector control, and the braking chopper is integrated.
Safety
The Safe Torque Off (STO) safety function is standard on the converter and needs no external safety component; its level is SIL 2 to EN 61508 and PL d to EN ISO 13849-1. On the PROFINET and PROFIBUS DP versions STO can also be selected over PROFIsafe. In Siemens' Safety Integrated manual only STO is listed for the G120C; functions such as SS1, SBC, SLS, SDI and SSM are not available for it.
G120C or G120
If you need the 200 V or 690 V classes, more than 132 kW, safety functions beyond STO, or the ability to change the fieldbus without changing the power section, the G120 is the better fit. If a smaller converter that is simpler to select is enough, choose the G120C.
Engineering
Commissioning is done with SINAMICS Startdrive inside TIA Portal or with STARTER (the USB port is on the converter itself). The BOP-2 and IOP-2 operator panels and the optional Smart Access module for wireless commissioning from a phone or laptop are available, and parameters are cloned with a panel or a memory card.

Frequently asked questions
How does the G120C differ from the G120, and which should I choose?
The G120 is modular: the power module and control unit are ordered separately, it covers the 200 V, 400 V and 690 V classes and powers up to 250 kW, and with F control units it has extended safety functions. The G120C is one piece: 0.55 kW to 132 kW, three-phase 380 V to 480 V only, and STO as its only safety function. If a smaller converter, simpler selection and STO are enough, take the G120C; if you need a higher voltage or power, wider safety functions, or a fieldbus change without changing the power section, take the G120.
How is the fieldbus version (PROFINET, PROFIBUS, USS) chosen?
On the G120C the fieldbus version is part of the article number. In Siemens-generated data sheets, …UB2 carries USS/Modbus RTU, …UP2 PROFIBUS DP, and …UF2 or …AF2 PROFINET and EtherNet/IP. According to the Siemens brochure, frame sizes FSAA to FSC come in all four versions and FSD to FSF only with PROFINET and EtherNet/IP; confirm the exact code in the Industry Mall before ordering.
Does the G120C have a safety function?
Yes, STO as standard, at SIL 2 to EN 61508 and PL d to EN ISO 13849-1. The fail-safe input is on DI 4 and DI 5, and on the PROFINET and PROFIBUS DP versions STO can also be selected over PROFIsafe. Other functions such as SS1 or SLS are not available for the G120C.
What software and tools commission the G120C?
With SINAMICS Startdrive inside TIA Portal or with STARTER, through the USB port on the converter. The BOP-2 or IOP-2 serve local commissioning and the Smart Access module serves wireless commissioning. Parameters are cloned with the BOP-2, the IOP-2 or a memory card.
Is an external braking resistor needed for braking?
The braking chopper is inside the G120C, but the excess DC-link energy has to be dissipated in an external braking resistor. These resistors are designed for the G120C, and for an EMC-compliant connection on frame sizes FSD to FSF the matching shield connection kit must be ordered as well.
