SENTRON 5SV residual current operated circuit breakers (RCCB)

SENTRON 5SV

Siemens residual current operated circuit breakers (RCCB) from 16 A to 80 A, 2-pole and 4-pole, with 10 to 500 mA rated residual current and types AC, A, F and B

Price and delivery time are given after a technical review.

Overview

Overview

SENTRON 5SV is Siemens' residual current operated circuit breaker (RCCB). A summation current transformer encloses all conductors of the circuit, neutral included: in a healthy circuit the currents add up to zero, and if current leaks to earth through faulty insulation the RCCB trips the circuit. An RCCB has no overload or short-circuit protection, so a suitable miniature circuit breaker or fuse must sit upstream of it.

Range

Rated current 16 A to 80 A in two configurations: 2-pole (1P+N, 36 mm wide) and 4-pole (3P+N, 72 mm wide). Rated residual current (IΔn) is 10, 30, 100, 300 or 500 mA, depending on type and configuration. Rated voltage is normally 230 V for the 2-pole and 400 V for the 4-pole; versions for 24 to 125 V and for 500 V also exist. The 2-pole type B takes four modules (72 mm).

Types

The type says which residual current waveform the RCCB detects, and the load behind it decides the suitable type. AC detects sinusoidal AC residual current only and is not permitted in every country, so check local installation rules. A also detects pulsating DC and is used for single-phase loads with an electronic power supply; smooth DC up to 6 mA does not impair its tripping. F covers every waveform type A does and also detects mixed-frequency residual currents up to 1 kHz, such as the output of a single-phase frequency converter in a washing machine or heat pump; it trips with a short delay and tolerates smooth DC up to 10 mA. B and B+ detect smooth DC residual current on top of the type F waveforms and are used in 50/60 Hz three-phase systems upstream of rectifier circuits; B detects up to 2 kHz and B+ up to 20 kHz. In the 5SV these two types are built with SIGRES technology in the SIQUENCE series.

Tripping versions

[K] (super resistant) has a 10 ms delay that makes it more immune to false tripping from transient disturbances and withstands surge currents above 3 kA. [S] (selective) is for an upstream group switch that must trip selectively against downstream RCCBs and withstands surge currents above 5 kA. SIGRES is a version for severe ambient conditions with active condensation protection.

Operation

Every device has a test button. Siemens specifies a half-yearly periodic test (annually for SIGRES versions), and under certain conditions this interval can be extended. Typical mechanical life in the data sheets is 10 000 operating cycles.

Mounting and accessories

Mounting is on a DIN rail and the terminals take up to 35 mm². The neutral connects on the left or right and the supply from top or bottom (SIGRES: top only). Auxiliary switches, fault signal contacts, shunt trips, undervoltage releases and remote control mechanisms come from the same accessory system as the miniature circuit breakers. According to the catalog, an undervoltage release combined with an RCCB is not suitable for EMERGENCY-OFF or EMERGENCY-STOP circuits.

Applications

  • Additional protection against electric shock (30 mA) in socket and lighting circuits
  • Fire protection against leakage currents (up to 300 mA)
  • Circuits with washing machines, heat pumps and other loads with a single-phase converter (type F)
  • Three-phase systems upstream of rectifier circuits (type B)
  • Selective group switch upstream of downstream RCCBs (version S)

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between types AC, A, F and B?

AC detects sinusoidal AC residual current only; A also detects pulsating DC; F adds mixed-frequency currents on top of A (for example the output of a single-phase converter in a washing machine or heat pump); and B/B+ add smooth DC on top of F. The load behind the RCCB decides the type: a single-phase load with an electronic supply usually needs A, a load with a single-phase converter needs F, and a three-phase system upstream of a rectifier needs B. Type AC is not permitted in every country, and the Siemens data sheet itself warns to observe national installation regulations.

Does an RCCB also trip on overload and short circuit?

No. An RCCB detects residual current only and has no overload or short-circuit protection. A suitable miniature circuit breaker (for example a 5SL) or fuse must sit upstream of it or in series, selected according to the manufacturer's information: the data sheet of each article states the maximum permissible series fuse (between 63 A and 100 A in the data sheets read). The short-circuit current rating with back-up fuse is 10 kA on 5SV3 and 5SV4.

Should I choose 30 mA or 300 mA rated residual current?

Siemens' technology primer assigns a rated residual current of up to 30 mA to additional protection against electric shock, values above 30 mA to fault protection (indirect contact), and up to 300 mA to fire protection. These ranges overlap: a device above 30 mA and up to 300 mA can serve both fault protection and fire protection. Where a resistive fault can start a fire, for example radiant ceiling heating, 30 mA must be used. The final choice follows the electrical installation rules of your country.

How often must the test button be pressed?

Siemens specifies a half-yearly periodic test, annually for SIGRES versions; under certain conditions the interval can be extended, and those conditions are in the catalog and the device instructions. The test is also required when the installation is commissioned.

What do the [K], [S] and SIGRES versions mean?

[K] (super resistant) has a 10 ms delay that makes it more immune to false tripping from transient disturbances and withstands surge currents above 3 kA. [S] (selective) is for an upstream group switch that trips selectively against downstream RCCBs and withstands surge currents above 5 kA. SIGRES is a version for severe ambient conditions with active condensation protection.

What is the difference between an RCCB and an RCBO?

An RCCB detects residual current only and, when it trips, disconnects every circuit downstream. An RCBO (such as Siemens' 5SV1 and 5SU1) combines residual current detection with overload and short-circuit protection in one device, and if each circuit has its own RCBO only the faulty circuit trips.
