SIMATIC HMI Basic Panels 2nd Generation
Siemens touch panels with function keys in four sizes, 4.3, 7, 9 and 12 inch, for simple visualization at the machine; PROFINET and PROFIBUS versions, configured in TIA Portal

The 2nd generation Basic Panels are Siemens' cost-effective operator panels for simple visualization at the machine: small machines, compact systems and projects with a limited number of tags and screens. All models are of the KTP type, that is, an analog resistive touch screen with function keys beside the screen, a widescreen TFT display and LED backlighting.
There are four sizes: KTP400 (4.3 inch, 480×272), KTP700 and KTP900 (7 and 9 inch, 800×480) and KTP1200 (12 inch, 1280×800). Every size is available with a PROFINET (PN) connection, and the KTP700 and KTP1200 also come in a PROFIBUS (DP) version. All models run on 24 V DC, have one USB port and are IP65 at the front once mounted.
User memory is 10 MB and the project limits are the same in all six models: 800 tags, 250 screens, 1000 bit messages and 25 analog messages, 50 recipes and two archives (one for messages, one for process values). There are no VB scripts; for needs such as scripting, larger archives or more screens, move to Comfort Panels or Unified.
Configuration is done with WinCC (TIA Portal) from version V13 upwards, in the same project as the PLC. The PN versions work with SIMATIC S7-1200, S7-1500, S7-300/400 and LOGO! as well as several non-Siemens controllers; the DP versions work over PROFIBUS or MPI and serial protocols.
According to the Siemens Industry Mall in November 2026, all six models are an active product with neither a phase-out date nor an official successor listed. Siemens also offers the newer Unified Basic Panels; the details are in the lifecycle note.

According to the Siemens Industry Mall on 2 November 2026, all six models are an active product (PM300) with neither a phase-out date nor an official successor listed. Siemens offers the Unified Basic Panels (MTP400 to MTP1200) as the newer generation and has a migration guide; that guide is not a decision to discontinue. Important differences: the Unified panels have no function keys (the SIMATIC Key Panel KP8 PN LX can add keys), run a Linux-based operating system and are configured with WinCC Unified.
The PN version has one RJ45 Ethernet port (PROFINET, 10/100 Mbit/s) and the DP version has one RS 422/485 port for PROFIBUS DP up to 12 Mbit/s. Only the KTP700 and KTP1200 come as DP. The connectable controllers differ too: the PN version works with S7 over Ethernet, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP, the DP version with PROFIBUS/MPI and serial protocols such as Modbus RTU. Sm@rtServer exists only in the PN versions.
According to the data sheets: Basic Panels have 800 tags, 250 screens, 50 recipes, two archives and 10 runtime languages, and have no VB scripts, pop-up screens or slide-in screens. Comfort Panels have, depending on size, 1024 to 4096 tags, 500 to 750 screens, 100 to 500 recipes, 10 to 50 archives and 32 languages, and support VB scripts, pop-up and slide-in screens and OPC UA.
With WinCC (TIA Portal) from version V13 upwards (the device manual is written for V14 and higher). The PN versions work with S7-1200, S7-1500, S7-300/400, S7-200, LOGO!, WinAC, SINUMERIK and SIMOTION, and also with Allen-Bradley EtherNet/IP, Mitsubishi MC TCP/IP and Modbus TCP.
According to Siemens' migration guide (09/2024), no mechanical change is needed from the KTP400 to the MTP400, from the KTP700 to the MTP700 or from the KTP1200 to the MTP1200. For the KTP900 the equivalent is the MTP1000, and the cut-out has to be enlarged from 251×166 to 264×189 mm. Note that the Unified Basic has no function keys and the project has to be moved to WinCC Unified.
